“ ’What’s Shakin’, alongside four Lovin Spoonful tracks
were five Paul Butterfield leftovers, and one each from Al Kooper, Tom Rush and
Eric Clapton & The Powerhouse. The latter was a group put together by Joe
Boyd, then running Elektra’s London office,
and his trial run as a producer.
They were effectively Elektra’s first super group before Rhinoceros was
but a dream: Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, Steve Winwood ( credited as Steve Anglo
for contractual reasons ), Manfred Mann’s Paul Jones and Spencer Davis’s drummer Pete
York. The track presented here is an amalgam of two Robert Johnson songs, which
became simply ‘Crossroads’; later to become a staple of Cream’s repertoire.”
