Em Julho de 2000, exactamente seis anos antes do desaparecimento físico de Syd Barrett, a editora norueguesa Krank Records publicou aquele que é porventura o mais radical e arrojado de todos os tributos ao músico de Cambridge: “Asyd Vinyl, A Tribute to Syd Barrett”.

As composições de Barrett nunca soaram “dóceis”, antes espelhos reflectores das idiossincrasias de uma personagem complexa e itinerante. Mas “Asyd Vinyl” vai para além do expectável. Acrescenta iconoclastia à iconoclastia. Transforma o projecto em algo extremo, onde as canções se afastam da matriz original, ganhando vida e personalidade próprias. Todos os Álbuns Tributo deveriam ser assim, sem limites, mas tendo em conta a música, exactamente como escreve Phil McMullen na contracapa da edição:

“ … the late 80s also saw the rise of the ‘Tribute Album’ phenomenon, spearheaded by the UK’s Imaginary Records with Syd Barrett tribute LP/CD entitled ‘Beyond the Wildwood’. Other ‘tributes’ inevitably followed, including a bizarre French disco mix of Pink Floyd and Barrett songs entitled ‘Rosebud/Discoballs’ on Atlantic Records; the majority of the material however (as with so many so-called tribute albuns) tends to be performed by artists keen to bathe in the reflected glory of the subject rather than any earnest attempt to do the music justice.”

Nunca se sabe tudo e, querendo, todos os dias se aprende alguma coisa. Não fora uma referência feita ao acaso por um amigo e talvez nunca me tivesse cruzado com estes dois volumes de uma compilação que, no que concerne ao folk tradicional britânico, reputo ser uma das melhores desde "Electric Muse ". Atente-se nos nomes envolvidos e acrescente-se a raridade de muitos dos temas. Não existe muito melhor por aí...
